"When I first embarked on my journey in BJJ, I was grappling with personal challenges that traditional weightlifting at the gym couldn't alleviate. That's when I had the privilege of conversing with Professor Hall. During our insightful discussion about life, he provided valuable insights into how BJJ could be a transformative force. Meeting Professor Shank further enhanced my experience as he enlightened me about the impact of overthinking, particularly during our sparring sessions. He pointed out my elevated breathing and encouraged me to embrace a calmer mindset, breaking free from a lifelong fight-or-flight mentality.
Joining Asgard proved to be a turning point for me. Not only did I witness a boost in confidence, but I also experienced significant weight loss, a remarkable achievement for someone on a larger frame. The camaraderie at Asgard is unparalleled, transcending mere friendships to create a sense of family. There are no cliques here—everyone is part of a unified team, fostering respect among brothers and sisters striving to become better versions of themselves.
The Asgard community goes beyond the physical aspects of BJJ; it's a sanctuary for those battling demons of trauma and pain. Through this martial art, we collectively overcome obstacles, emerging as stronger individuals ready to make a positive impact on our community and the world. I am immensely grateful for choosing Asgard, and I encourage anyone reading this to reach out to Professor Hall, Professor Shank, or any member of the Asgard family. It's not just a gym; it's a life-changing decision where you'll learn the principles of BJJ and apply them to enrich your everyday life."
This is why we do what we do at Asgard Combat Sports

The self defense and competition aspects of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) are very technical and physically demanding. It takes an average of 10 years to reach Black Belt in BJJ. The belt colors are white, blue, purple, brown and black. It is generally accepted that a blue belt in BJJ is roughly equivalent to a black belt in other martial arts.
A purple, brown or black belt in BJJ can incapacitate virtually anyone on the planet in a matter of seconds in a self defense situation. In addition, most BJJ fighters are trained in other full-contact martial arts like kickboxing or boxing. BJJ is devastatingly effective. It is not just a sport but the most effective method of self defense.
The Jiu-Jitsu brotherhood produced an excellent article on the belt progression in BJJ. Check it out by clicking on the link

Law enforcement officers should be able to control a suspect without undue physical harm to the suspect or themselves. However, there are many examples where that does not happen. Jiu-jitsu/grappling is superior at controlling someone and it should be mandatory training for all LE at least through blue belt. A blue belt can effectively handle most suspects with minimal to no injury both to suspect and officer. Asgard Combat Sports provides training to law enforcement at a discounted price.
Brazilian jiu-jitsu (BJJ) is a martial art and combat sport that teaches a smaller person how to defend themselves against a larger adversary by using leverage and proper technique.
BJJ originated from judo and traditional Japanese jiu jitsu. It contains stand-up maneuvers, but it is most famous for its devastating ground-fighting techniques. Gaining superior positioning—so one can apply the style’s numerous chokes, holds, locks and joint manipulations on an opponent—is the key in BJJ. Since Judo is an essential component of jiu-jitsu training, it is incorporated into jiu-jitsu techniques.
The evening class is split between basic and advanced students. The mat space is large and physically divided to alllow for effecient teaching of both skill levels.
All gi and no gi classes are included in jiu-jitsu dues. Monday, Wednesday and Friday noon classes are called Jiu-Jitsu Lab and are designed to help members come in and work on their respective game plans and/or problems they encounter with certain techniques.
Kickboxing incorporates techniques from boxing such as the jab, cross and hook and adds kicks in various combinations to make students an effective stand-up fighter. In addition to self defense, kickboxing is excellent for improving physical conditioning.
When combined with other full-contact martial arts such as Brazilian jiu-jitsu (BJJ), one becomes excellent at self-defense whether standing or on the ground. In fact most MMA fighters have solid training in kickboxing and BJJ.
Judo is a Japanese grappling sport that uses gripping and off-balancing techniques to throw an opponent off their feet and onto the ground. Once on the ground we can apply pins, chokes, and armbars to submit our opponent. Judo teaches the importance of angles, balance, pressure, speed, timing and efficiency. At Aztlan Judo we provide a safe and fun environment to learn, grow and get in shape for people of all ages and backgrounds.
Our judo class offers:
-High energy workouts
-Drills to build better balance and coordination
-Self defense techniques that you can apply in the real world
-The opportunity to build confidence and self discipline
The ultimate goal of “the gentle way” is to become a better human being and better member of the community. If that sounds like what you’ve been searching for, then come join us and start walking the path today.
The Women’s Brazilian Jiu Jitsu class at Asgard Combat Sports is a class that meets Tuesday and Thursday at noon and is focused on the fundamentals of the sport. This class is for women only and is meant to improve the female student’s body awareness of themselves and those around them and help the student develop a confidence in themselves through movement and technical skill. By learning foundational jiu jitsu skills, students will develop muscle memory to remain calm and react rather than freeze up in stressful situations. Training with other women in a male-dominated sport is empowering and provides an opportunity to learn in a safe and supportive environment. All women above the age of 16 are welcome to attend. No woman is too old, too out of shape, too unfamiliar with athletics or exercise to participate. Led by a female Brazilian Jiu Jitsu practitioner, this class is aimed at helping women become better versions of themselves.
This class for kids ages 7-14 teaches break falls, basic takedowns, grappling and striking. It also instills confidence, self-control, discipline and anti-bullying tactics.
The class is split between the beginning Jaguars and the more advanced Eagles. The mat space is large and physically divided to alllow for effecient teaching of both skill levels.
Strength and conditioning is a vital part of good health, especially for older athletes and those with more sedentary jobs. This class is intended as a supplementary part of our athletes' regimen, and will build physical strength, agility, and cardiovascular fitness for our practitioners. Our coaches are committed to leading with safety and form as the top priority, and slowly building an athlete's capabilities in a way that enhances their lifestyle and functional fitness.
The type of yoga taught at Asgard/Ascend incorporates yoga techniques into combat sports training. It encourages stability, flexibility, as well as a conscious connection with the body created by dynamic movement and breath work.
Yoga class is currently held on Saturday and is free to members and those attending open mats.

"I've always wanted to try martial arts, just wasn't sure which one. A friend of mine at work has been doing jiu-jitsu for years. So I came in and did the one week free trial. I'M HOOKED! Been going twice a week now for 3 months. The coaches are great teachers. Everyone is easy to get along with and extremely helpful. I'm 50 yrs old and do not work out. This is an excellent way to lose weight and get in shape not to mention self defense. Also a fantastic stress reliever."

"I was suffering from anxiety and was having trouble mentally. The class gave me an outlet for what I was dealing with in a safe and controlled setting. Through the conditioning workouts and training I've lost 15 healthy pounds in under 6 months. I'm 43 and almost in as good a shape as I was in my 20's. I hold all the coaches in the highest regard. They are personable, they know what they're doing and they care about you and your well-being. Asgard has changed my life for the better. I wish I would have joined a lot sooner."

"I have been training at Asgard since late January of 2021. I love this place. Coach Hall, the owner, is a great man and very encouraging as well as accommodating to anyone who walks in those doors. The kickboxing coaches Justin and Tanner are top notch and always willing to help. They always give tips and encouragement every session. Pretty much anything you need is provided , just come in gym clothes and a good attitude and you’ll have a great time. Would definitely recommend it to anyone and there’s a trial period so if you decide it’s not for you, you’re not out anything. Trust me, you’ll love it. "

"Great place for kids! My son takes a few classes here. He learns excellent technique from Coach Mo. In addition to technique, he teaches the kids how to be good people as well. The kids learn respect for peers, parents, teachers and coaches. He tells the kids the importance of completing their school work and chores at home. It is an all around excellent place! "

As a parent of a child who has little interest in anything other than video games, I’m so happy to see him looking forward to kickboxing and grappling classes. The prices are reasonable and the staff are very patient and knowledgeable. Great hidden gem! "
